PEOPLE & PLACE

The coast is part of the community.

Conservation decisions concern livelihoods, shared places and the people whose knowledge comes from living alongside the sea.

A SHARED COASTAL LANDSCAPE

Livelihoods belong in the picture.

The 2023 institutional report describes Middle Bank as a traditional fishing ground for fishers from Batu Uban, Gelugor, Jelutong and Sungai Pinang. These documented uses belong in conservation and planning discussions.

Fishing practices, recorded

The report describes gill and drift nets, long lines (rawai) and crab pots (bubu). These specific practices show how the bank is used; they do not quantify today’s catch, income or dependence.

Gathering at the lowest tides

Residents are reported to collect edible shellfish at very low tides, sometimes for sale in local markets. This is a historical report finding, not a visitor invitation or a statement about current access or food safety.

A coast with many users

The report also lists anglers, aquaculture cages, research, conservation, marine traffic and port activities. Planning needs to identify which users are affected, how uses overlap and who can participate.

Community concerns, clearly attributed

The Protect Karpal Singh Drive Action Committee has called for stronger protection of Middle Bank and raised concerns about coastal development. These statements express the committee’s position; project-specific claims require examination of original records.

Whose knowledge informs the next decision?

The report documents uses; the committee statement expresses an attributed advocacy position. Neither replaces consented first-person accounts from fishing families, gatherers or other residents. No original interviews are published in this edition. Future contributors should be able to choose attribution, review translations and decide whether sensitive locations are disclosed.
